Undoubtedly the best performance value on the market, these rods are extremely forgiving and very lightweight, actually helping to minimize the most common mistake in casting: the tailing loop. Designed with a multi-taper tip, they feel slightly stiffer than our other rod families, generating high line-speed with a slightly wider loop. That extra stiffness also makes them quite powerful, capable of making nice long, accurate casts. Some rod companies charge twice what a GL3 will cost you. But if you’re looking for a high-performance graphite rod that will let you cast like you know you can, none of them will outperform a GL3.

Like its two-piece GLX cousin, this 81/2-foot for 4-weight is capable of handling everything from small dries to small streamers. But this one breaks down into four pieces, making it easier to sneak out of the office during a particularly notable hatch of March Browns.

An excellent all-purpose bigger game rod, this model works well for dorado and small to medium tarpon. It’s also an excellent choice when you’re fishing the flats for redfish or snook and the wind’s really howling. Yes, a 10/11 is on the powerful side for such game, but when it’s hurricane season, this baby really slices through the wind.

FR1688/9-3     Length:  14'     Line:  8-9 Spey line     Pieces:  3     Travel
A remarkable summer-run steelhead rod that’s especially good on large western rivers where distance is an issue and backcasts are limited due to trees and brush. If you chase Atlantic salmon, this is a great spring rod for the likes of the infamous Miramachi. It gives you precise control on either Spey or overhand casts and it’s capable of keeping a lot of line in the air, even with larger flies.

FR783     Length:  6'6"     Line:  3     Pieces:  2
This is a short, light-action trout and panfish rod designed to allow you to fish small to medium-size flies on creeks and small streams where low, overhanging branches and shoreline brush restrict normal casting methods. It’s a nice, soft, light-action rod for short, precise casts with light leaders, and it works especially well in windy conditions, thanks to its shorter, lower-profile casting stroke.
